Priya Shah needed two yards. Her running back gained one. The television cut to commercial; the fantasy app added nothing; somewhere, Nate Holloway began typing a message he had not earned.
That was the entire game in miniature. Fourth & Regret did almost everything required to beat the Parking Lot Kings. Shah got 26.8 from her quarterback, 19.1 from her flex and a genuinely useful 13.4 from a tight end—a rare and beautiful event, like seeing a comet or a commissioner admit the scoring settings are weird. Then Monday night arrived.
The Kings’ defense returned a fumble for a touchdown and finished with 17 points. Holloway won by 1.7 while 41.8 points sat on his bench wearing street clothes. It was not managerial brilliance. It was a piano falling from the sky and landing on the other manager.
Shah’s final player caught a pass at the goal line and was tackled at the one. One more yard would have reversed the result. Instead, the standings will record a Kings victory and absolutely none of the emotional context.
The newspaper is less forgiving. This was a robbery conducted in full view of ten witnesses, and the thief immediately posted a crown emoji.
